Our petition has attracted 5000 signatures in 36 hours! That is testimony to a widespread perception, which you share, that what happened at the Aalst carnival was completely unacceptable.

  • The mayor of Aalst has given unconditional support to the displays, saying that they were "only making fun of religion".
  • UNESCO have said the Belgian authorities should take action against those responsible, but have not withdrawn their favoured 'heritage status' from the carnival.

But as one commentator said, there is an institutional problem here.

And the institution of UNESCO is part of the problem if it just talks and does nothing. The same goes for the city of Aalst.

UNESCO must remove 'heritage' status from the Aalst Carnival.

PS we have partnered with StandWithUs to have a letter sent automatically to the Belgian Justice minister. If you would like to send one, click here.
