Petition updateEnd Atlanta's Unfair Solid Waste Fees2022 Solid Waste Status
Atlanta Solid Waste Coalition
7 Feb 2022

In October 2018, The City of Atlanta agreed to a solid waste settlement--tacitly acknowledging unfair treatment of the class action plaintiffs. A  Facebook video posted recenty by AMAL Properties praises the class action settlement (linked at the end of this Update). At the outset of 2022, though, Atlanta City Council hasn’t corrected or repealed the unfair fees.

Now it's time to again ask your Atlanta City Council representative to repeal the conditions that led to the class settlement. This rate structure is a demonstrated failure! End it!

Additionally, ask your representatives to
-Preserve the potential for new class actions as a means for obtaining relief from any future unjust taxation.
- Propose and adopt new legislation as needed to replace unfair and excessive rates of the recent past!
- Restate fees for common good services as a tax.
- Mail the solid waste billing with Atlanta property tax bills.                                                                 -Consider outsourcing most of the City’s solid waste services.

As described in a 2021 solid waste cost study commissioned by Atlanta's DPW, the City’s related operating costs are alarmingly high in contrast to those of nearby municipalities or commercial services. In any new proposals,we ask the City to                                                      -Commit to adopting new efficiencies in operations, cost accounting, and risk modeling.  -Definitively align any new rates with the lower local market standards.
