In 2014, a chemical spill in West Virginia spoiled watersheds, harmed the state’s outdoor recreation and tourism industries, and drew the attention of local, state, and federal policymakers. Two years later, we can’t afford to continue waiting on action to protect these waters and lands. Ask Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito to introduce a bill designating the Birthplace of Rivers National Monument now!

Six of West Virginia’s beloved waterways start in the Birthplace of Rivers, located within the Monongahela National Forest.

Hunters, anglers, hikers, paddlers, local business leaders, and elected officials agree that this special place deserves a star on the map. West Virginia has long been known as “wild and wonderful,” and the trout streams and rugged landscape of the Birthplace of Rivers embody that motto. The stark beauty, clean waters, and vibrant forests are a natural draw for tourists and others who enjoy spending their time outdoors.

A national monument would protect the wild forests and unique bogs of the watershed and would generate an estimated $14.5 million annually in tourism spending. Those dollars would go to local restaurants, hotels, outfitters, shops, and farms. In turn, those small businesses would be able to offer greater work stability to employees.

We need to ensure that these pristine waters and remarkable public lands remain wild and wonderful for future generations. Please let your senators know it is imperative that we protect the Birthplace of Rivers this year.
