Ask Netflix to stop working with Wulflund, who sells racist shirts
The Issue
Title: Ask @Netflix & @netflixwitcher to stop working Wulflund, who sell racist shirts
Witcher’s media requests can be made through Lauren S. Hissrich, @LHissrich on Twitter, email: thewitcherpressrequests@netflix.com
The image of a man dressed like a “Viking” in the US Capitol Riot on January 6 got many people’s attention— and highlights the problem of white supremacists who use Norse and other pagan symbols. This issue is very widespread, and so we must be active to root out racists who use pagan imagery.
The shows the Witcher on Netflix and Vikings on the History Channel get their props from the company, Wulflund, which also makes racist t-shirts. In the fall of 2020, this company sold “Viking Lives Matter” t-shirts that mocked the Black Lives Matter movement.
Their racism isn’t just rooted in American imagery. Wulflund used to sell “Defend Europe” shirts, a slogan used by anti-Muslim groups. Those shirts had the phrase “Vienna 1683,” referencing a historical battle with the Ottoman Empire, and likely why it’s used by anti-Muslim groups.
They have removed the "Defend Europe," "SPQR" and "Viking Lives..." shirts after this petition was started, along with swastika necklaces. However, Wulflund has not stated publicly why they did this yet.
Currently, they sell shirts with “Molon Labe,” a phrase from the Spartans which means “come and take them,” and is an expression used by Golden Dawn, a far-right political party in Greece; shirts with SPQR, a Roman phrase now used by white nationalists; and swastika necklaces. Individually, these products can be explained away as innocent or as historical references— but together, it is clear what the owners of Wulflund stand for.
In addition, the owner has been threatening me with a lawyer, for example, on this video I made about the subject: https://youtu.be/9g4_P-jOsts
This company fosters and encourages the kind of casual racism that makes everyone interested in Vikings, the Witcher, or European folklore & paganism look racist. Please join me in asking Netflix— who has the statement “Black Lives Matter” in their Twitter bio— in taking a stand against companies like Wulflund.
