I had asked Rick Keyes, Meijer's CEO, to reply by June 6th regarding the petition and a request for a meeting, but I have heard nothing. In one last effort to contact Meijer directly, I have emailed Jackie Debruler who is the Director of Health and Wellness at Meijer. If anyone could understand the need for healthy checkout aisles in our communities or even be open to discussing them, I would hope that it would be her. At the very least, I'm hoping she will be able to explain what Meijer's stance is on providing healthy food choices at checkout and if it is something they are going to consider for the future. I know I have talked a lot about the Fred Meijer book in past updates, but one quote keeps coming back to me. It's a quote by Earl D. Holton, President of Meijer from 1980 to 1999. He is quoted as saying, "'In retail, it is not enough to understand your business. You must also understand the communities that form your market…We made sure that personal letters got personal responses explaining our position..."' I would like to believe that this consideration for Meijer customers is still valued and shown. However, since reaching out to Meijer by phone and email last September, by phone and email in December, and most recently by email and mail, I have gotten no response. None. I'm not sure what this all means, but I know it doesn't feel right. So as much as I dislike putting her on the spot, Jackie Debruler is our last hope. Thank you all again for supporting the healthy checkout aisle petition! Respectfully, Jane Kramer
