Ask Epic Systems to Add Lung Cancer Screening Reminders for Providers

Ask Epic Systems to Add Lung Cancer Screening Reminders for Providers
The Issue
Every year, tens of thousands of Americans die from lung cancer—most without ever being screened.
Despite strong recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), only 18-20% of eligible patients receive life-saving lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose CT (LDCT).
One of the major reasons? Providers aren’t being reminded.
Epic Systems is the largest electronic health record (EHR) company in the country. Epic already supports provider reminders for screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies—but only when health systems build and enable them.
We’re calling on Epic Systems to add a USPSTF-based clinical reminder for LCS—so that when a patient meets criteria or gets close (age, smoking history), their provider receives a notification to start the conversation.
Why it matters:
- Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer in the U.S.
- Early detection through LDCT cuts mortality by up to 20%
85% of people eligible for lung cancer screening but not getting screened see a provider. - A simple reminder in Epic could help save thousands of lives
- We urge Epic Systems to lead the way in equity, prevention, and evidence-based care by integrating lung cancer screening alerts into its platform.
