Many fish are genetically modified for cosmetic reasons, and then sold as products.  The modification has no benefit to the fish, and can even be harmful to the animal.  I recall a genetically modified tetra fish who died from a distended swim bladder.  These gene modifications are as inappropriate as ear cropping, tail docking, declawing, debarking, etc.

Fish are also modified to produce more meat by growing up too fast in fish farming.  Another reason animals are genetically modified is to use them for animal testing.  This is common in mice, rats, fruit flies, fish, pigs, etc.  All genetically modified laboratory animals are killed and disposed of as “hazardous waste”, and many GMO animals are bred to not be able to fly or move around.  Animals with undesirable (original) traits are also killed and disposed of.

Their risk to the environment is assessed through cruel toxicity testing on animals, feeding the animals to other laboratory animals, and by putting the fish into increasingly cold water until half die.  All GMOs are tested on animals.  And all imported fish have some members of the school killed for disease testing.  https://inspection.canada.ca/animal-health/aquatic-animals/imports/test-selection-and-sampling-requirements/eng/1548710570282/1548710570578

None of these modifications benefit the animals.  All genetic modification of animals should be banned as cruelty as they are cosmetic procedures.  And animal testing of GMOs must stop too.  Canada needs to stop exploiting animals.
