People in Charlotte are spotting men dressed like cops, driving cars that flash emergency lights and say “Police,” but they’re not real officers. One man was seen wearing a “Police” hat, with strobe lights in his windows, and took off the moment someone tried to photograph his license plate. Others have reported cars marked “Security Police” cruising public streets, designed to look just like CMPD cruisers.

This isn’t harmless. It’s terrifying. And it’s a serious threat to public safety.

Impersonating a police officer isn’t a prank. It’s a tool used by predators, traffickers, and con artists to intimidate, manipulate, and sometimes assault. Women have been targeted. People have pulled over in fear. Every day that Charlotte allows this to go unchecked, the danger grows.

We can’t wait for someone to get hurt. The city and CMPD need to act now. They must investigate these impersonators, take illegal lights and fake badges off the streets, and help residents understand who is really allowed to carry out a traffic stop.

If we don’t stand up and demand action, we’re telling these fake cops it’s open season on our safety. Don’t let them get away with it.
