Despite the federal government's recent change in direction regarding the legalization of marijuana, the lawyer representing the Federal Crown in my matter, David Mills, is continuing to press the matter forward. The date for the preliminary inquiry for the trial will likely be set during the next hearing on January 26th. I've been authorized under the MMPR since September of this year for a condition I've had since childhood. It was only diagnosed in 2010, but I'd been self-medicating to deal with the effects since 2001. I've been trying to get medical authorization for the last six years, but the doctors in Western Newfoundland continue to bow to social stigma and peer pressure. They simply refuse to authorize patients in need, not wanting to be known as 'Pot Doctors.' I only received my authorization through luck as I managed to stumble across one of the few doctors in Labrador willing to do the research. According to the Supreme Court of Canada's recent ruling in RvSmith, forcing this kind of 'socialized medicine' is a violation of the security of the person. I know people undergoing chemotherapy who request access to marijuana to deal with the nausea who are denied because of the associated stigma. I know others with genetic disorders that run through their family, half treating with ineffective but prescribed medication, the other half self-medicating with marijuana. The ones that use marijuana for their conditions are living healthy lives while the others suffer side effects from the medication that only marginally deals with their condition. We're not ruled by law. We're ruled by money and opinion. No surprise there seeing how Canada is largely responsible for the wave of genocidal hatred and bigotry that has swept the globe. Canada pretends to be a liberal and egalitarian society, but this country has been run by bigots and fanatical religious extremists for so long we're as bad as Saudi Arabia and Israel. Canada is just better at hiding its true nature. I'll post another update sometime in early January when I hear more from the other lawyer protesting my original unlawful detainment. The only benefit of existing below the poverty line during all this is I don't have to pay for the basic legal aide that is on offer. They're not permitted to be proactive in resolving the matter though, so it continues to drag on.
