Dear Supporters, One point that I did not mention in my petition is that I have tried emailing Huffington Post a number of times on this issue. Today, I finally got a response (my third email in three months). As expected, it was a form response which showed that the recipient did not even read the first sentence of the email. The main part of the response was this: "I wholeheartedly agree -- people with disabilities are too often invisible in the media and I would love to work on changing that. Though we may not be in a position to create a disabilities voices section at the time, I will look into other ways to highlight these stories." What the recipient did not understand is that without media giving us the opportunity to present ourselves as a movement on par with other social justice movements, without media allowing us the opportunity for visibility, we will not gain the recognition they agree that we lack. It is frustrating to see that they recognize the invisibility of disability topics in the media, that this invisibility could easily be addressed, but those with the power to address it are not willing to take the necessary steps. I responded that I will continue to fight for support for a Disability Voices section through this petition, for the purpose of showing them that there are many who would benefit from the news and bring readership to their website. Supporters, we need more people to sign! Right now, we are at 18 supporters, but we need a multitude more to show Huffington Post that disability is a serious topic that deserves recognition. I am looking into other ways of increasing visibility to this petition, but if you know anybody who would be willing to sign, please pass it on to them! Thanks!
