We did it! Congratulations San Mateo Mayor Amourence Lee!
San Mateo finally has a mayor!
Thank you for being such an important part of holding San Mateo City Hall accountable in upholding its charter and appointing Amourence Lee as mayor.
On Monday, December 11, we rallied outside San Mateo City Hall while applicants to the vacant council seat made presentations. During public comment, this petition was presented with over 1000 signatures and the comments you left on the petition were read aloud. Names of San Mateans and concerned citizens from the Bay Area, around the country, and even around the world spanned 23 printed pages that were submitted along with this petition to the public record. You can feel proud that your name is among them because, as Dr. Martin Luther King said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
We are thrilled that Rich Hedges was appointed as the newest councilmember and, immediately after, Amourence Lee was finally elected to her rightful place as mayor.
Even though the order of business was ultimately not followed per the charter—the councilmember was seated before the first order of business to elect a mayor was completed—we’re satisfied that order has finally been restored and the city can get on with business.
This experience is a reminder that democracy is possible only when ordinary people like us stay involved in our government and hold our elected officials accountable. Just imagine the change we can make with so much engagement and momentum.
On that note, we invite you to stay informed and involved. Mayor Lee and the new San Mateo council will need all of us to heal and move forward, including revisiting the charter process to make sure San Mateo never goes without a mayor again.
