Thank you again for adding your name to the call for San Mateo City Council to uphold its charter. The petition is now closed because Mayor Amourence Lee was appointed and San Mateo finally has a mayor.
Congratulations on being among the amazing 1,352 signers who were such an important part of this success.
Unfortunately, our job is not done.
The same people who were behind the effort to block the peaceful transfer of power to our new mayor have started an effort to recall Mayor Amourence Lee.
Recall is the power of the voters to remove an elected officer before the next election. It is a lengthy, costly process and we, the taxpayers, foot the bill. The right to recall is an important one that should be reserved for egregious cases that cannot wait to be resolved by the next election. They should NOT be used to oust a fairly elected official simply because you don’t agree with them or to uphold a racist history of disenfranchising the communities they represent.
And yet, that is exactly what is happening. A small minority of voters are still not happy that Amourence Lee was appointed as mayor, even though she was voted in by a unanimous councilmember vote and with an overwhelming outpouring of citizen support for her. In fact, she roundly defeated current councilmember Lisa Diaz Nash in the 2020 election.
Now, instead of focusing on healing divides and doing the city’s business, Mayor Lee must divert some of her valuable time countering this outrageous and frivolous recall effort. She needs our help again.
