Appoint an INDEPENDENT AUDITOR GENERAL for Brampton
The Issue
Brampton Needs an Independent Auditor General: Protect Taxpayers' Money and Restore Public Trust
Decision makers : Mayor and Members of Brampton City Council; Premier of Ontario; Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; Prime Minister of Canada
The petition
Brampton spends more than $1.4 billion a year. That is taxpayers' money, and residents deserve to know it is spent fairly, legally and wisely. Right now, they can't be sure. Brampton's audit function reports to the City's own administration, not independently to the public. That is the structural conflict an independent Auditor General is designed to remove.
Residents demand to know how their money is spent, with transparency on request and the details independently audited, because public trust is earned, not assumed. A city delivering 44 services to more than 750,000 residents through 9 departments and 36 divisions, on a budget of roughly $1.4 billion, with procurement rules being rewritten, needs an independent Auditor General, because oversight that reports to the same administration it reviews isn't oversight at all.
In 2017, the Ontario Ombudsman recommended that Brampton appoint one, noting that Toronto, Ottawa, Markham and Sudbury already had. Almost a decade later, the City still hasn't. Meanwhile, Peel Region has appointed its own Auditor General to oversee its budget.
Brampton is Canada's ninth-largest city and one of the fastest-growing of the largest cities, yet it has no independent Auditor General.
An Auditor General isn't about blame. It's about good governance, ethics and public trust.
We call on Brampton Council to appoint an independent Auditor General before the end of 2026, and on the Province and the Government of Canada to support stronger municipal oversight.
