Axolotls (also known as “Mexican walking fish”) are an endangered amphibian species found in the swampy remnants of Lake Xochimilco and the canals leading into southern Mexico City. Due to habitat loss from urbanization axolotl species are now down to a tragic 1,000 in the wild. Improper waste regulations and increased tourism in Mexico City contribute to their rate of extinction.  Trash, plastics, heavy metals, along with toxic levels of ammonia spill from waste-treatment plants, into the canals where the salamanders live.  They are extremely delicate beings, so take a more delicate approach to how you leave the Earth in your wake. Throw things in the trash, do not litter. We must be mindful of the footprints we leave behind because if we don’t it will only be another’s decline…

As an axolotl owner it deeply saddens me how these animals go unnoticed.  But, I believe that we can raise awareness to these creatures through the use of pop culture. That being said; if Apple created an axolotl emoji more awareness around the axolotl will be made.
