Provide facilities to the Anganwadi center operating in Varanasi #KuposhanmuktBanaras
The Issue
During the meeting I heard from my senior Ms. Shruti Nagvanshi that 803 children of Musahar and Chamar enrolled in 19 Anganwadi Kendras are not regular getting Posahar (nutritious diet) due to lack of Institutional infrastructure. We both were worried that the number of the malnourished children will increase in the summer and the monsoon.
It reminds me the urgent situation we had many times had in my office when we get Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) or Moderate Acute Malnourishment (MAM) children. Admitting the child in hospital and taking cares, providing emergency support and fund raising for the nutritious diet to prevent further malnutrition. we initiated this petition because we don’t want feel or see face of skinny and lean child in the lap of mother with helplessness in her eyes or death of children of lesser God.
According to the district administration records, Varanasi is home to an estimated 700 children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), along with about 1,500 with Moderate Acute Malnourishment (MAM).
The numbers of the malnourished children increased during the summer and rainy season due to the lack of the basic institutional infrastructures. Peoples’ Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) did survey of the 49 anganwadi kendra operating in marginalized communities in Badagaon, Pindra, Harhua and Aarajiline block of Varanasi district.
According to the finding of our report 19 Anganwadi kendra operating in Musahar and Chamar basti of above 4 blocks are in most vulnerable condition. In which 14 Anganwadi centers are operating in the open sky, 1 in tin shed, 1 in Panchayat, 1 demolished building of the pumping set and lack of staff at the Kendra.
The Anganwadi karyakarti provides services under the shades of tree but it is not regular it depends on the weather condition. During extreme weather children are deprived from getting posahar (nutritious diet) and their regular weight mapping.
Nagina Musahar mother of Sikha (name changed) said when my daughter did not get posahar and biscuit from the angawadi than whole day she demand food and money for buying the biscuit. We are the daily wages worker and we do not have sufficient money to buy biscuit or full day food for my child. Anyhow we manage the two ends.
Join me in asking Minister State (Independent charge) Child Development and Nutrition To provide institutional infrastructure operating under open sky, demolished houses and appointment for vacant post of anganwadi karyakarti and sahaiyka
