ANNUL John Chebochok's Election and STOP Him from Leading Any Tea Factory

The Issue

On 20th February 2023, a nerve jeering documentary aired by BBC Panorama and BBC Africa Eye, titled "Sex for Tea," painted a distressing image of persistent sexual exploitation within James Finlay  Limited and Ekaterra companies. Over 70 women, cuffed by the chains of  systemic abuse, had allegedly been victimised by tea factory managers among them John Chebochok in what has now come to be known as a deplorable 'sex for work' scandal. According to The Kenya Demographic Health survey Kenya's national sexual violence prevalence rate stands at 13%. The matter is on public domain and has been confirmed by Chebochok's former employer James Finlay limited.

Yet, as this didn't seem enough to shake the boardroom, neither did the public outcry that followed. It is disheartening that John Chebochok, in spite of the graveness of the exposè revelations is eyeing and has was cleared to contest for the esteemed position of Director in the Toror Tea Factory that is under Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) and even more unfortunately got elected. Acknowledging the depth of the exposed matter within his former business space, it becomes an immediate concern to revoke his election .

The torment and trauma  endured by the dozens of women to expose the uncouth conduct of exploitative employers should not be compromised by allowing individuals implicated in such scandals to secure authoritative roles.

His election, poses a major reputational risk both in the Kenya Tea Developers Agency and the larger industry.

Acknowledging that his previous role as manager at Finlay was terminated due to the very reason, his candidature approval and  election is a blatant disregard to principles ethics integrity of social justice.

This is therefore an appeal to both the IEBC and the KTDA to Revoke his election and Stop him from leading any tea factory!

Join me in signing this petition to call upon the IEBC CEO Mr. Marjan Hussein Marjan and the Chairperson - Tea Board of Kenya Mr. Jacob Kahiu to revoke the election of one Mr. John Chebochok and bar him from any leadership positions until the matter is conclusively had and determined.
