Where things stand:
- AAPS teachers have now gone 6 months without a contract - the longest stretch since 1994.
- It's not just teachers. Paraprofessionals and office staff are also without a contract, and the union representing paraprofessionals recently told the school board that teaching assistants are "leaving in droves."
- A district-run survey of AAPS residents found that 61% want teacher compensation to be the board's top budget priority - more than any other item, including building or land sales.
- AAEA President Fred Klein has said the district's top-of-scale teachers now earn roughly $12,000–18,000 less than counterparts in comparable districts and the district is losing experienced educators to that gap.
- Statewide, Michigan ranks 44th in the nation for starting teacher pay, and 75% of Michigan residents support raising it.
