The Issue

After observing undercover video of cow slaughter captured in Mexico by Tras Los Muros in their documentary Matadero filmed in Mexico, I had to take action, because modern slaughterhouses work similarly in all countries.

This referenced video shows the huge difference between the image of "a clean and fast kill" that the general public has over cow slaughter, and what cow slaughter is actually like. This process is inhumane and wrong on every level.

It's important to take into consideration that the animals start experiencing terror as soon as they are violently loaded into transportation trucks. Since many farms are in remote locations, the transportation period is often very long and grueling, so grueling that some animals don't survive.

Once the cows arrive at the slaughterhouse, they are usually kept in holding areas, where they can easily smell the blood and sometimes even hear the screams of cows who are slaughtered. Cows may be kept for days in these holding areas.

As can be seen in video links below, the cow slaughter itself is very violent for the cows. I observed cows having ears and legs cut off while still moving and trying to get away. This is not ethical or humane, even when using a shock device placed on their head that sends an electric charge that  ‘stuns’ them. These animals are conscious and aware of what is happening. These animals should not be awake or moving during this process. Cows are being inadequately stunned and remain fully awake while being slaughtered. Wherefore, being alive during this murderous act needs to be illegal, and punishable on a federal level. Although current legislation states what should be considered humane, the federal law does not include how it is to be enforced nor does it include research proving that the same methods work regardless of animal size. The HSA should specify how slaughterhouses must sedate these animals, including but not limited to what sedatives are to be used after thorough research and examination proves the most effective and ethical methodologies. I am calling for an amendment to the Humane Slaughter Act that includes specific provisions for every slaughter house to abide by, including ways to which enforce ethical regulations.
