I need to tell you about something I have seen through my work investigating wildlife crime.
I’ve reviewed footage and evidence of gangs dragging pregnant badgers from their dens. I’ve seen the dogs set on them, tearing at their faces, their bellies, their backs — while men cheer and laugh. The badgers fight desperately, but they don’t stand a chance. They are literally ripped apart for “sport.”
This is what badger baiting season looks like in the UK. And it’s happening right now.
It’s not only the badgers who suffer. The dogs forced into these fights are victims too. Mauled and bleeding, they’re crudely stitched on kitchen tables with no pain relief... or simply shot when they’re no longer useful.
Last year, AWIP compiled intelligence reports that led to dogs being rescued and criminal charges being considered. But the cruelty hasn’t stopped.
And this year will be even worse, Friend.
Between November and March, badgers are most vulnerable. Pregnant mothers defend their setts fiercely and that’s exactly why baiters target them. They call it “better sport.”
And in underground rings which are live-streaming, it’s even darker. Badgers are dragged into makeshift arenas where as many as 15 dogs are set on them at once, while crowds place bets. Sometimes the badger’s jaw is broken or her teeth pulled out first... just to prolong the torture.
This isn’t history. It isn’t folklore. It’s happening in our countryside, right now.
Friend, you and I cannot let this continue.
I’ve seen what badger baiting does. And I know that with public pressure, authorities and lawmakers will be forced to act. But they need to hear your voice.
