You may remember that in the last few days, over 10,000 people have signed our petition to stop the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. We are pleased to report that the festival is not as large this year as it has been in previous years, showing that our collective efforts are making an impact. However, the challenge is far from over.
The issue extends beyond one festival, Friend. It is a recurring tragedy in rural areas across Southeast Asia.
Consider these heart-wrenching statistics: despite it being illegal in many countries, millions of dogs are still being slaughtered. Over 30 million dogs and 10 million cats are killed annually for human consumption across Asia. These animals, often stolen pets or grabbed from the streets, are crammed into trucks, driven for days without food or water, and then brutally killed.
In South Korea, dogs are bred in appalling conditions, kept in barren cages without proper food, water, or protection from the elements.
In the Philippines, in collaboration with a local partner organisation, we rescued 28 dogs and facilitated the arrest of 8 dog meat traders. These successes inspire us to do more, but we need your help.
