The Issue

I couldn’t believe this - "The South African government on Friday, 25 February 2022, granted annual hunting and export permits for dozens of big game, including 10 critically endangered black rhino and a similar number of leopards. It also gave permission for dozens of elephants to be killed, in keeping with international laws on the trade of endangered species, saying its elephant population was growing and that fewer than 0.3 percent are hunted each year."

"Proceeds from government-approved annual hunting quotas go towards local marginalized and impoverished rural communities, where the hunts happen."

"A total of 10 black rhinos may be hunted and 150 elephants," the Forestry and Environment Ministry announced.

"Black rhino are listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as critically endangered. But numbers of black rhino in the wild have doubled to more than 5 000 from an historic low three decades ago.”

We all know this is mainly about financial gain and not for public good. They need it as they mismanaged and wasted money without ever being held to account.  I can’t help but think that the more rhino and elephants we have the more visitors the more jobs and the more jobs at the local reserves etc. A great example is the Tembe Elephant Reserve in KZN! The Tembe people run the lodge. These jobs not only solve the big unemployment problem we have in South Africa but it boots the economy. These jobs form part of the tourism sector which contributed R139 billion to the country's economy in 2018 alone, providing 716 000 jobs, that is a public good and that is worth maintaining!

We call on the Department to:

  • provide the public with evidence of the conservation justification for the hunting of 10 vulnerable leopards, 150 endangered elephants and 10 critically endangered black rhino this year, in 2022. This would include:
    • scientific evidence of the animals’ conservation status and definitive numbers in South Africa; and scientific proof that this specific quota fulfills a wildlife population management function - given that the selected species are all either vulnerable or endangered; and
    • a forecast of the economic contribution of the hunting (per the quota), and the manner in which such contribution will be used to develop and uplift specific rural communities (including plans to build infrastructure in those communities); and
  • retract/revoke the quota in its entirety if the Department cannot provide evidence showing that there is a reasonable conservation justification for the quota.

Sign this petition calling for a Stop to ZA Government Rhino, Leopard and elephant  Hunting Permits. This is not the right way to boost the economy at all!!

THIS HAS TO STOP!! THIS NEEDS WORLDWIDE ATTENTION
