Animal Ambulance services green light use

The Issue

Support for the Use of Green Flashing Lights on Animal Ambulances

We, the undersigned, are calling for approval of the use of green flashing lights on animal ambulances to improve the safety and efficiency of emergency animal transport across the country.

Every day, animal ambulances undertake critical transfers—taking sick and injured animals to referral centres or responding to emergencies in the community. These journeys are often time-sensitive, with lives depending on the safe and prompt arrival of the ambulance.

At present, animal ambulances face significant challenges when travelling through busy traffic. Other road users are often unaware that the vehicle is carrying an animal in need of urgent medical care. This lack of visibility can cause delays, stress to both animals and drivers, and, in some cases, risk to animal welfare.

We believe that allowing the use of green flashing lights on animal ambulances would make a meaningful difference.

These lights are not intended to grant emergency exemptions or to allow faster driving, but rather to increase awareness among other motorists—alerting them that the vehicle is carrying an animal in a critical condition and needs safe passage.

Veterinary professionals across the UK have expressed strong support for this proposal, recognising the crucial role animal ambulances play in saving lives. In one recent case, for example, a dog with spinal injuries could have benefited from increased road visibility—helping ensure a smoother and safer journey without speeding or risk to others.

Animal ambulance drivers and welfare responders are not asking for special treatment, only for the ability to safely make progress in traffic while ensuring that the animals in their care receive the help they need as quickly and safely as possible.

The introduction of green flashing lights would:

Improve awareness for other road users,
Reduce stress and delays during emergency transport, and Support the vital work of those dedicated to animal welfare and rescue.

We respectfully ask that the relevant authorities consider this petition and take steps to allow the controlled and responsible use of green flashing lights for animal ambulances. We are open to other colour options too.

Together, we can make the roads safer for those who dedicate their time to saving animals’ lives.

Sincerely,
