UPDATE #2:
1. A big thank you from Madeline Sershen’s family. The signatures and shares have been unbelievable. Please continue to share. We need to reach 10,000!
2. There has been some media coverage regarding our call for change. Please check them out:
From CBS - https://newyork.cbslocal.com/video/3892791-family-of-teen-killed-in-queens-crash-calls-for-routine-retesting-of-senior-drivers/
From Patch - https://patch.com/new-york/bayside/teens-death-queens-crash-spurs-demand-aging-drivers-test
3. There has been some opposition expressed and that is okay. We need to hear the arguments against this change in order to create a bill that can be passed. Eighteen states (including Florida and Illinois) already have shorter renewal period requirements for drivers older than a specified age. To be clear, we do not want to take independence away from older drivers. We want our roads to be safer. We want our children to be safe. We want DMV to be held accountable for keeping unsafe drivers off the road.
4. If you haven’t called the Governor’s office at 518-474-8390, please plan to call on Thursday, July 5th. This makes a big impact and is extremely important in our mission to get his support and make change happen.
5. Finally, we are looking for passionate individuals to join this cause. Please contact Rita Barravecchio (Maddie’s aunt) at ritabarravecchio@hotmail.com if you would like to volunteer your time, share your skills (drafting bills, social media, community organizing), or help connect us to state representatives.
Have a safe July 4th!
