Bohemia, NY – A Institutional Safety Officer was injured when a parolee ran out of a parole office and fought with the officer and a parole officer when they attempted to get him in handcuffs. The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 13 at approximately 12:45 PM. The parolee, whose name is not being released, was placed in a waiting room of the Suffolk County parole office. A parole officer was attempting to take a urine sample from the parolee when he stated to the safety officer and a second parole officer that he was going to go outside for some air. He was instructed by the safety officer that he could not leave the building. The parolee suddenly pushed the second parole officer, ran through the metal detector and out of the building. The safety officer and parole officer gave chase. They ran across the roadway in front of the office and onto a grassy area where they caught the parolee. They attempted to get the parolee’s hands behind his back so he could be handcuffed. The parolee continued to wrestle with both officers. After a brief struggle, the officers were able to get his wrists in handcuffs and under control. The Safety Officer sustained an injured knee and bruise to his chest. He was taken to Southside Hospital for treatment. He was treated and released. He did not return to duty. The parolee was returned to the office for processing.
