We're making cash KING again - New record set three weeks after surcharge ban

Thank you for helping to make cash KING again in Australia.
Just three weeks after card surcharging ended, Australia has set a new all-time record for the total value of Australian cash banknotes on issue.
The Reserve Bank of Australia reported today that $160 million of new notes were issued last week (to Wednesday 21st October) to take the total value of Australian notes in circulation to $109.389 billion ($109,389,000,000).
Since the 30 September 2026, the RBA's net issuance of banknotes has totalled $521 million.
The previous record for cash in Australia was $109.253 billion ($109,253,000,000) set during Christmas week 2025.
More retailers are preferring cash and more retailers are offering discounts for cash since the 1st October.
Consumers are realising it's a good idea to have cash in their pocket when going shopping, to access good deals and help their favourite small businesses avoid high card charges.
Small businesses around Australia are actively promoting the use of cash in the wake of the ban on card surcharging.
