Yesterday, the Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced his cash mandate will start on the 1st January 2026.

While governments around the world  (like Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Austria, the EU and many states and cities in the USA) are introducing real laws to protect cash, Chalmers has produced a set of regulations that appease banks and encourage businesses to reject cash payments.

The proposed cash mandate only applies to big supermarkets and fuel retailers. No other retailer is covered by this mandate. 

Chalmers says:  "We’re delivering on our commitment to mandate cash acceptance for essential purchases ..."

NO, Jim Chalmers committed to delivering a cash mandate covering medicines, food, fuel and other essentials so NO Jim, you're not delivering on your commitment.

Meanwhile, Australians continue to use more cash than ever before. Last week the Reserve Bank issued $422 million worth of new banknotes to take the total value of Australian cash on issue to over $108 billion for the first time ever.

The Chalmers cash mandate is a betrayal. 

The Chalmers cash mandate will allow banks to further restrict our access to cash and further increase their profits from card and phone transactions.
