Banks often claim that cash usage is declining - but that's FAKE NEWS.

Something changed in Australia during the COVID pandemic. Australians turned back to cash and cash usage stopped declining.

FOR OVER THREE YEARS, CASH USAGE IN AUSTRALIA HAS BEEN TRENDING UP.

The Reserve Bank of Australia reported that an additional $375 million of new banknotes were issued last week, taking the total notes on issue to a new all-time record of $107.8 billion (on Wednesday 3rd December).

There has never been more Australian cash in the hands of consumers and businesses than there is right now.

Despite banks continuing to close branches, the Reserve Bank of Australia reported on Monday that the number (and value) of cash withdrawals made over the counter in bank branches is UP since the end of COVID in January 2022.

There were 1.9 million over the counter cash withdrawals made in October 2025, up from 1.6 million in January 2022.

Banks complain about the cost of cash and the cost of keeping branches open. When banks close a branch they like to talk about 'changing consumer behaviour' but the official stats show Australians continue to demand access to bank branches as much, if not more than ever before.

ATM and EFTPOS cash withdrawals are also not falling in Australia, despite more restrictions from banks and retailers.

Australians want cash to be available and accepted. Banks and governments don't seem to be so committed to our legal tender.
