Hi Cash Lovers,
The ACCC reiterated the vital role that cash plays in the Australian economy at a banking conference in Sydney last week.
PayDay News reported that the banker's association announced the “digital revolution continues to reshape banking, and Australians are embracing change with enthusiasm and confidence”.
Perhaps in response, the Chair of the ACCC, Ms Gina Cass-Gottlieb, noted recent research from the 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer that found:
"62% of Australian respondents reported a moderate or high sense of grievance – defined by the belief that the system favours the privileged and that government, including regulators and business serve a select few and act in ways that hurt them."
That may be related to banks hiking up account-keeping fees (as St George is rumoured to be doing at the end of July) and closing branches.
Big banks took account-keeping and transaction fees from low-income (many indigenous) customers, all whilst posting huge profits.
Banks sit at the heart of our financial system. We can't live in Australia without a bank account.
So banks must act in socially responsible ways and not seek to gouge profits from customers with limited choices and budgets.
Please share our petition calling for a bank and cash guarantee.
That means banking services in every town and mandated cash acceptance.
