Hi Cash Lovers,
The big four banks are responsible for distributing cash in Australia. They have each signed an agreement with the RBA to distribute banknotes throughout the nation.
There is only four banknote distribution agreements so there is one way to buy new banknotes from the RBA - go through one of the four big banks. The big banks have complete control of the cash system, but now they just want to complain about the cost of cash.
Most Australians understand the banks are responsible for distributing cash, according to a Yahoo News poll. 70% of respondents have voted "industry stakeholders" to pay for Armaguard's costs, rather than taxpayers (30%).
The results indicate that:
Australians expect their very profitable big banks to uphold their agreements and distribute cash to all parts of Australia.
If the banks won't do it, a sizeable minority of Australians seem to think this is a government responsibility - ie: cash is national economic infrastructure.
