Hi Cash Lovers,
There is no possibility of a guarantee of privacy in a cashless society where every transaction could potentially leave a digital footprint.
And there can be no guarantees of reliability in a 100% digital payments world. Even if financial institutions and telcos manage to build a reliable payments system with no outages, bad actors globally are targeting the internet's weak points.
Last week undersea cables were cut in apparent acts of sabotage.
Nations around the world are discovering how vulnerable digital payment systems can be. Scandinavian countries are concerned about their security if they continue towards a completely or almost completely cashless economy.
This is why Norway dramatically changed course towards a cashless society and (from 1 October 2024) now requires retailers to accept cash.
Sweden is expected to also do a u-turn and require retailers to accept cash in 2025.
"Privacy is acknowledged as a fundamental human right" says the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
But there can be no guarantee of privacy without easy access to cash.
Already digital commerce is powering "a new economic order" known as surveillance capitalism , the commodification and sale of our personal data.
What started as advertising is now a threat to our freedom says Professor Shoshana Zuboff.
Our personal data, mostly collected by social media companies, is being used not only to predict our behaviour but to influence and modify it.
The social media companies that sell your data to advertisers are selling predictability - they want to predict your behaviour based on your interests and browsing history.
What if they could improve their product - predictions of our behaviour - by modifying our behaviour?
The best way to ensure success is “to tune and herd and shape and push us in the direction that creates the highest probability of their business success” says Shoshana Zuboff.
"There’s no way to dress this up as anything but behavioural modification”.
