The Stephen Jozef Memorial for Non-Essential Workers’ Rights
The Issue
On Monday, March 23, 2020, beloved New Yorker Stephen Jozef lost his life to coronavirus. To honor Stephen and his loved ones, we are petitioning the State of New York to ensure that no other human is sacrificed in the name of greed or profit.
The goal of the Stephen Jozef Memorial for Non-Essential Workers’ Rights petition is to clearly and unambiguously define “ESSENTIAL” as it applies to “ESSENTIAL WORK” in the construction industry during this time of crisis — right now as the deadly COVID19 pandemic pervades throughout New York State.
ESSENTIAL WORK must be limited exclusively to the construction and/or maintenance of ESSENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE: hospitals, shelters, and transportation infrastructure (roads/railways).
Construction industry workers include (but are not limited to): general contractors, electricians, plumbers, steamfitters, pipe fitters, laborers, carpenters, painters, elevator mechanics, flooring installers, glaziers, ironworkers, masonry workers, concrete laborers, roofers, solar photovoltaic installers, plasterers, engineers, equipment operators, insulators, welders, and site managers.
We are petitioning for the SUSPENSION OF all NON-ESSENTIAL WORK until there are no new cases of coronavirus in the United States.
Stephen was an active member of the advocacy groups and unions fighting tirelessly to ensure the rights and safety of construction workers. We are here to continue Stephen’s legacy. He is a hero in our community and his death will not be forgotten. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Stephen’s family during their time of grief.
We ask for this petition to go into effect IMMEDIATELY.
