The Issue

The problem:

Education standards in the United States have been dropping at an alarming rate. At the center of this issue is the lack of support that teachers in under-resourced districts are getting. The right-to-work law prohibits union security agreements, hindering and often eliminating teachers unions in states where it applies. In order to create incentive for teachers to work in these states and in under-resourced schools, teachers unions are a necessity.

About myself:

I am Aiden Schames and I am a junior at Byram Hills High School. This petition is part of a larger project that focuses on improving education standards in the United States.

Recent developments:

In recent weeks, the Dept. of Education has been under fire. This is a step in the wrong direction; weakening a body that maintains equity and organizes grant money, especially for the purpose of aiding under-resourced schools and guaranteeing DEI, can only mean bad things for the country. It is with this in mind that I call young people to action because this issue puts all of our futures under siege. Engagement, wherever possible, is a necessity. While this petition in particular doesn't tackle the issue of the Dept. of Education, there are petitions and other mediums of engagement out there that do. My petition and greater project focuses on improving education, and a multifaceted solution is required.
