Sharing for Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE):
Something terrible has been happening at a new type of “pet shop” in Daejeon, disguised as an animal shelter. They charged Korean Won ₩600,000 to ₩1,000,000 ($400 to $700 USD) to former pet owners who agree to turn over their dogs to them with the promise that they will find them good homes. When the volunteer animal advocates raided this place, more than 80 surrendered dogs were at this shop.
The reality of these facilities is very different from the image they are projecting. The conditions there are filthy, and neglect is widespread. The smell of ammonia is overwhelming. Dogs are kept in cramped spaces, which spreads diseases and causes them to violently attack each other. Both of which often lead to injury or even death. The large dogs had to share a single food bowl in a tiny space, which naturally led to continuous fighting among them regardless of how docile they used to be in their former lives. In response, the shop owners began scattering food on the filthy floor. The fighting among the dogs then became fiercer and more commonplace. This is blatant abuse.
Several volunteers from various organizations collaborated to save these dogs. CARE also rescued two large dogs from this shop (Hershey and Gomtang), and we are currently taking care of them at our RUN Shelter after treatment.
We will formally announce the seriousness of this case soon. CARE will also file a complaint of animal cruelty against this particular owner. Unfortunately, the number of fake “pet shops” like this is increasing around the country, as they are able to capitalize on the guilt of the former owners who want to surrender their dogs. They and the public don’t realize that dogs sent to these facilities are left unattended to fend for themselves in dangerous and filthy conditions. We must make an example of these initial cases before they multiply throughout the country. We will expose these “pet shops” and ensure they are punished through all applicable laws.
