The Issue

My name is Riana Rizoyeva, and I am like many students whose school experience has been adversely affected by the current ban on the use of personal devices during lunch periods. I find myself sitting alone during lunch as my friends and I have different lunch waves. When I finish eating, there is little else I can do. Before the ban, I could stay connected with my friends through texting, engage in meaningful conversations, and feel less isolated. Now, I am unable to do this due to the law that restricts phone usage during lunch hours.

Currently, the existing legislation prohibits the use of cellular devices during instructional hours. However, lunch periods should not be regarded as instructional time. Lunch is a time for students to relax, socialize, and recharge before going back to class. Preventing the use of phones during this time is unnecessary and hinders students' ability to connect with peers, especially when in-person interaction isn't possible.

Data suggests that social connections are vital for the mental health and well-being of students. According to the American Psychological Association, social isolation can negatively impact student performance and emotional health. By allowing phone use during lunch, we not only provide students with the means to communicate but also support their mental and social well-being.

Many schools have already adopted policies that permit phone use during non-instructional time, recognizing that it encourages social interaction and gives students a chance to coordinate with peers regarding extracurricular activities, home responsibilities, or simply to unwind.

I urge educational lawmakers and school administrators to consider this viable amendment to the existing policy. By specifically excluding lunch periods from the restrictions on phone use, we can ensure that students are afforded the opportunity to connect with their peers in a healthy and supportive way. After all, lunch should be a time for students to be themselves freely, without unnecessary constraints.

Sign this petition to amend the law and allow the use of personal devices during lunch. Let's stand together to create a more inclusive and socially engaging environment for all students. Your support could make a real difference in the daily lives of countless students across the region.
