As someone who cherishes the vibrant and diverse community of Queer Michiganders, I am deeply concerned about the precarious situation of same-sex marriage under the current legal framework in our state. Section 25 of Article 1 in Michigan's constitution provides inadequate protection for same-sex marriage. This deficiency leaves an unsettling level of uncertainty for many individuals who seek to legally commit to the person they love.

According to a survey conducted by Pew Research Center, approximately 61% of Americans support same sex marriage nationally, indicating a positive societal shift in sentiment. Despite this, in Michigan, those protections are not clearly defined or assured. Addressing this gap matters not just to the nearly 4% of Michigan adults who identify as LGBTQ, but to all of us who believe in equality and justice.
