Amend Phone Polices For Students In Virginia

The Issue

I'm a middle school student in Virginia, and at my school, they've already put an almost complete ban on phones. This hasn't stopped kids from sneaking them into class or finding other ways to distract themselves. It's frustrating because the state says they're changing the policies for our mental health, yet students at my school here are still dealing with serious mental health issues. It doesn’t add up, and worse, it makes us feel unsafe.

In America, where the threat of school shootings looms, our phones are our lifelines. Without them, we can't quickly reach our parents, and in the fearsome event of a shooting, being unable to say goodbye is a terrifying thought. A more flexible policy could offer peace of mind and a sense of security to students and parents alike.

The current policy prohibits phone use during school hours, but I propose we allow controlled use of phones during non-instructional times: at lunch, during locker passing periods, and in classrooms with a teacher's permission. This adjustment respects both the need for focus during lessons and the practical uses of phones for safety and social connection.

Statistics show that overly restrictive bans can lead to negative outcomes, such as increased anxiety and a lack of effective communication in emergencies. The National Center for Education Statistics indicates that student safety is directly linked to their feeling of connection within the school environment, and phones can play a crucial role in this.

Help us create a school environment that supports our mental well-being and safety by signing this petition. Your support could lead to a more balanced and understanding approach to phone use in Virginia schools. Sign today for safer and more supportive schools.
