My ex-partner is a convicted paedophile, and our daughter bears his surname. Despite the crime he committed and how it transformed our lives irrevocably, he continues to hold the same parental rights as me, her mother. This includes the right to refuse the change of her surname, which he insists on keeping as part of her identity. However, I believe this association might not only endanger her but could also bring unnecessary distress as she navigates through life.

The law should empower the non-offending parent with more authority to make essential decisions regarding the child’s welfare. Currently, pedophiles retain equal parental responsibility (unless they have committed a crime to their child directly) that allows them to block essential changes that could protect children, such as altering their names or making crucial decisions about their future welfare and education. This lack of legal distinction fails to acknowledge the severe breach in trust and safety these offenders have demonstrated.

It is crucial now, more than ever, for us to rally together and demand a legal amendment. This change should stipulate that individuals with convictions relating to child sexual offenses automatically have their parental responsibilities reviewed and, where necessary, reduced. The aim is to protect the interests and well-being of the child, making sure that their psychological and physical safety is always the top priority.

Statistics indicate that the emotional and physical impact on children involved in such situations is profound, often resulting in long-term psychological challenges. By adjusting who holds significant parental responsibilities, we are not only protecting children’s immediate safety, but also ensuring their healthier emotional development.
