Amend Oklahoma's State Law to Strengthen Protection Against STD Transmission

The Issue

As an Oklahoman who has personally experienced the devastating consequences of contracting two permanent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) from my ex-boyfriend, I am deeply concerned about the lack of adequate legal protection against STD transmission in our state. It is time for us to come together and demand a change that will safeguard the health and well-being of all Oklahomans.

My story is not unique. According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Oklahoma ranks among the highest states in terms of reported cases of STDs. This alarming statistic highlights a pressing need for stronger laws that address this public health crisis head-on.

Currently, Oklahoma's state law does not explicitly criminalize knowingly transmitting an STD to another person without their consent or knowledge. This legal loophole leaves countless individuals vulnerable to life-altering consequences, both physically and emotionally.

To rectify this issue, we call upon our lawmakers to amend Oklahoma's state law regarding STD transmission as follows:

1. Make it a criminal offense to knowingly transmit an STD without disclosing one's infection status or obtaining informed consent from their partner.
- By holding individuals accountable for their actions, we can deter irresponsible behavior and protect potential victims from unnecessary harm.

2. Establish comprehensive education programs on sexual health and responsible behavior.
- Prevention is key in reducing the spread of STDs. By providing accurate information about safe sex practices, testing options, and treatment resources, we can empower individuals with knowledge that can save lives.

3. Increase access to affordable testing and treatment facilities throughout the state.
- Many people are unable to afford necessary medical services due to financial constraints or lack of nearby healthcare facilities. By expanding access through funding initiatives or partnerships with existing organizations, we can ensure that everyone has equal opportunities for diagnosis and treatment.

By signing this petition today, you are joining me in urging our state legislators to prioritize the health and well-being of all Oklahomans by amending the current state law on STD transmission. Together, we can make a difference and create a safer environment for ourselves, our loved ones, and future generations.

Let us not wait for more lives to be affected before taking action. Stand with me today and demand change. Together, we can protect our community from the devastating impact of STDs.
