Article 1, Section 6 of the United States Constitution ensures that Senators and Representatives are compensated for their services. However, in a time of government shutdown, when countless federal employees are going without pay, it seems only fitting and fair that our lawmakers face the same financial repercussions. Such a measure would provide an incentive for Congress to prioritize avoiding government shutdowns.
In recent years, there have been 21 government shutdowns, with the longest one causing an estimated $11 billion hit to the economy in early 2019, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). While teachers, service members, and other federal workers were tightening their belts, members of the Senate continued to receive their six-figure salaries. This disconnect between lawmakers and citizens only serves to deepen the divide and undermine public confidence in our elected officials.
We propose that Article 1, Section 6 be amended to stipulate that Senators will not receive their salary during a government shutdown. This amendment will ensure that those responsible for the gridlock face tangible consequences, promoting a more sincere effort toward resolution and compromise.
