Letter to IBAMA - Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources

It was with a heart full of hope and gratitude that I received the news that IBAMA had denied the licence for Petrobras to drill oil wells in the mouth of the Amazon. This decision was supported by the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva. But the fight continues! Petrobras has resubmitted the exploration request and the environmental agency is facing pressure into granting the license.

As civil society, we SUPPORT IBAMA's decision and we ask you to STAY STRONG and not give in to political pressure.

The Amazon is a rich and delicate ecosystem that cannot be subjected to the uncontrolled exploitation of fossil fuels and limitless ambition. It is essential for the health of our planet! Therefore, the decision to deny the request for exploration in the Foz do Amazonas Basin is of utmost importance and deserves to be unwaveringly upheld.

"The Amazon rainforest, the mouth of the Amazon River, and the Atlantic Ocean in this equatorial zone are not only a vital part of the biodiversity of our planet but also an essential source of life for millions of people, both directly and indirectly," states a letter signed by 80 organizations that was sent to the federal government, requesting that the license not be issued. "The impacts of this activity and a potential oil spill can cause immeasurable damage to the environment and the population."

Now more than ever, it is essential for Brazil to be at the forefront of investment in clean and renewable energies and to fulfill the socio-environmental agenda discussed in the elections. We have the responsibility to protect and preserve our natural resources and seek solutions that promote economic development in harmony with the conservation of natural resources. Definitely, new exploration is not the way to go!

Brazil has the potential to lead the transition to a cleaner and renewable energy matrix. Harnessing this potential means creating jobs, generating wealth, and promoting a sustainable future for future generations.

By maintaining the decision to deny oil exploration in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, IBAMA will demonstrate its commitment to protecting the environment and the well-being of Brazilian society as a whole. It will be an inspiring example for other institutions and countries, showing that it is possible to reconcile economic development and environmental preservation.

SIGN THE PETITION AND SHOW IBAMA THAT WE ARE TOGETHER IN THIS! We ask you to resist external pressures from those who see the environment as a bargaining chip. For a Brazil that grows with respect for itsa nature!
