Plastic-Free Family-

One of our signers sent me this recent article in TechCrunch on a new concept created in Berlin called LivingPackets.

According to the site, The Box is reusable, trackable, 98% air and would eliminate the need for a ton of cardboard and plastic waste as it is designed to be protective on its own.

We reached out to the founder for comment and to see if he has engaged Amazon yet with his proposed solution and will report back when we hear. We also want to learn more about the lifecycle of this product which is currently 2% post-consumer waste, 98% air, according to the site.

In the meantime, I'm curious to hear what you think of this solution.
Is this something you would be open to and what other questions might  you have for the founder?

Additionally, many of you have responded that the best way to avoid shipping waste is to shop locally. While this is definitely true for individual shipping waste and helps keep the waste centralized, most goods and raw materials are not produced locally so there is still a shipping component and plastic that arrives at many stores that consumers may never see.

YES, shop local and source locally as much as possible. Avoid buying things that are shipped to your local stores from far away if a local replacement will do.

But, let's please keep in mind where those 'local' goods and raw materials originate before we treat that as the complete solution to the plastic packaging problem. Ask questions, talk to your local store owners. Ask how they handle the plastic waste they receive and if they provide feedback to their suppliers to reduce it.

More on this in a future post.

Have a great weekend!
