The Iranian ambassador to Norway is still invited to the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in Oslo!!

The Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2022 was given to the human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, the Russian human rights organization Memorial, and the Ukrainian human rights organization Center for Civil Liberties. One of the arguments (translated from Norwegian) given from the Committee was that:

‘’The Prize winners represents the civil society in their home countries. They have through many years fronted the right to critique power, as well as fronting basic human rights for the citizens of their countries. They have marked themselves exceptionally in their efforts to document crimes of war, human rights violations and the abuse of power. Together, they represent the importance of civil society for peace and democracy”.

This passage from the Committee begs the question: when this is the very reasoning for this year’s Prize, isn’t it quite paradoxical that the Iranian ambassador is invited as a guest to the Peace Prize ceremony 10th of December in Oslo? If there is only one truth in this world, then it is that the Iranian embassy in Oslo does not support the civil society in Iran. They do not stand for basic human rights for the masses of people who have for over a month now been out in the streets protesting with their very lives. What they do stand or, on the other hand, is covering up human rights violations and the outright cold-blooded murdering of civilians by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The embassy, in no way whatsoever, represent the foundational values that the Norwegian Nobel Institute was built on, and neither does the embassy support the work done by the institute.

How can we offer a prize to someone supporting the values and work of the institute, while at the same time having invited guests that desperately and cowardly fights those values? Many see the faults in this logic because it delegitimizes the handing over of an important symbolic prize. For example, the Swedes see this, as they have decided that the ambassadors from Russia, Belarus and Iran are not invited to the Nobel Prize Ceremony. If we truly believe the values argued for through the Committee, then we by all means have to exclude the Iranian ambassador from this year’s guest list. Given the obvious prestige and symbolism of a peace prize in a world that seems burning any way we turn, we have to show a continuity in working for peace all over this world. The Norwegian Nobel Institute does not achieve this when they invite the Iranian ambassador as a formal and accepted representative of one of the most brutal and repressing regimes in the world.

We demand that the Norwegian Nobel Committee, The Norwegian Nobel Institute and their affiliated partners withdraw the invitation given to the Iranian ambassador in relation to this year’s ceremony for the Nobel Peace Prize 10th of December 2022 in Oslo.

Nobels fredspris for 2022 gikk til menneskerettighetsforkjemperen Ales Bialiatski fra Belarus, den russiske menneskerettighetsorganisasjonen Memorial og den ukrainske menneskerettighetsorganisasjonen Center for Civil Liberties. Begrunnelsen for fredsprisen var blant annet:

‘’Prisvinnerne representerer sivilsamfunnet i sine hjemland. De har i
mange år stått opp for retten til maktkritikk og grunnleggende rettigheter for borgerne. De har gjort en enestående innsats for å dokumentere krigsforbrytelser, brudd på menneskerettigheter og maktmisbruk. Til sammen viser de sivilsamfunnets betydning for fred og demokrati.’’

Når dette er begrunnelse for årets fredspris er det et stort paradoks at den iranske ambassadøren er blant gjestene som er invitert til seremonien for prisutdelingen 10 desember i Oslo. For er det noe den iranske ambassaden i Oslo ikke står for så er det å stå opp for sivilsamfunnet i Iran. De står ikke opp for grunnleggende menneskerettigheter for folket som i over en måned har vært ute i gatene og protestert med livet som innsats. Det de står for er å dekke over regimets forbrytelser og undertrykkelse mot befolkningen. De  dekker over Den Islamske Republikken Irans brudd på menneskerettigheter og drap på sivile. Ambassaden representerer ikke verdier som stiftelsen er bygget på og som Nobelinstituttet fremmer gjennom sitt arbeid. Hvordan kan vi i desember stå på scenen og dele ut en pris til noen som står for verdier vi hedrer og verdsetter høyt, samtidig ha spesielt inviterte gjester i salen som kjemper aktivt nettopp mot disse verdiene? I Sverige er det besluttet at ambassadørene fra Russland og Belarus og Iran ikke inviteres til nobelprisseremonien i Stockholm 10 desember i år. Hvis vi virkelig står opp for verdiene som er fremmet i begrunnelsen for valget av årets prisvinnere så er vi nødt til å ekskludere den iranske ambassadøren fra gjestelisten for årets seremoni i anledningen fredsprisutdelingen. Når det deles ut en så viktig og prestisjefylt pris i en tid hvor verden brenner fra alle kanter, er det viktig å vise kontinuitet i arbeidet med å fremme fred over hele verden. Dette oppnår ikke instituttet når de inviterer den iranske ambassadøren som er representant for et av de mest brutale og undertrykkende regimene i verden.

Vi krever at Den Norske Nobelkomité, Det Norske Nobelinstitutt og deres tilknyttede stiftelser trekker invitasjonen til den iranske ambassadøren i anledning årets seremoni for fredsprisutdelingen 10. desember.2022.
