The Issue

Since the Santa Barbara Unified School District restricted access to YouTube on school networks, students like me have faced significant challenges in using it as a vital educational tool. As an integral part of our learning toolkit, YouTube offers a wealth of free educational content that complements our curriculum. However, many teachers struggle to transfer these valuable resources to platforms like Canvas, leaving students without immediate access to important learning materials.

For countless students, YouTube is more than just a video platform; it is an essential resource for understanding complex topics, finding alternate explanations, and discovering engaging tutorials that help us grasp difficult concepts. Educational channels such as Khan Academy, CrashCourse, and HowToBasic provide high-quality content that enriches our knowledge and supports various learning styles.

Research shows that visual and interactive learning, which platforms like YouTube excel at providing, enhances comprehension and retention of information. In a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, it was found that 87% of teachers believe that educational videos have a positive impact on learning outcomes.

Furthermore, in a digital-first world where educational content evolves quickly, having instantaneous access to the latest educational videos ensures that students remain up-to-date with current methodologies and innovations in different fields.

We understand concerns about the misuse of YouTube for non-educational purposes. However, instead of a complete ban, the district can implement filtering tools or white-listed educational channels that ensure students gain access to content appropriate for classroom use.

By reinstating student access to YouTube, the Santa Barbara Unified School District can empower both teachers and students to share and utilize this invaluable tool efficiently. We believe this change will enrich the learning experience and support the academic success of all students within the district.

a complaint from a parent stating that her 13 year old daughter was sneaking her IPad into her room at night to watch YouTube. This is something some parents struggle with, not all. Everyone one should not be subject to this consequence because a few students do this. That is a parent problem, not the student’s.

Please sign this petition to urge the Santa Barbara Unified School District to restore YouTube access in our schools, providing us with the resources we need to thrive academically.
