Allow Windsor High School students to use phones during school breaks
The Issue
We are asking for a compromise on the current phone policy.
We understand that the goal of the policy is to improve student interaction, participation, and the overall school environment. However, we believe there is a middle ground that can accomplish those goals while still giving students reasonable access to their phones.
Instead of completely restricting phone use throughout the school day, we are asking that students be allowed to use their phones during passing periods and lunch, while keeping the current restrictions during class and instructional time.
Passing periods and lunch are not instructional periods, and allowing limited phone use during those times would give students a chance to communicate with family, check important messages, manage personal responsibilities, listen to music, or simply have some personal time without interfering with classroom learning.
We believe this would be a fair compromise between students and administration. Students would still be expected to put their phones away during class and focus on learning, while the school would recognize that students also need reasonable opportunities to use their phones during non-instructional time.
Our goal is not to eliminate the school’s efforts to improve student interaction. Our goal is to meet halfway. We believe students and administration can work together on a policy that encourages students to interact with each other while also respecting students’ need for communication, personal responsibility, and limited phone access.
We aren’t asking for unlimited phone use. We’re asking for a balanced policy that works for everyone.
