Allow Volunteer Hours To Count Towards Student Loan Forgiveness PSLF

Allow Volunteer Hours To Count Towards Student Loan Forgiveness PSLF
The Issue
Not everyone can work in a public service position to qualify for PSLF, but many can serve the public with their skills and talents by volunteering.
Public service should extend to volunteer hours. Even with the $10K-$20K student loan forgiveness, borrowers are still drowning in student loan debt.
Volunteer hours should be counted towards reducing student loan debt. Our country could have better-served communities and another pathway to help borrowers pay off their student loan debt easier and faster.
There are currently a few specialized volunteer programs that offer debt repayment assistance through volunteer work for a limited number of borrowers.
The US Department of Education should head up a program that covers all borrowers that want to provide public service to their communities. With the right government program, it could be a win-win for both communities and borrowers.
Some quick stats-
- According to VolunteerHub 1 in 4 Americans volunteer and the majority are individuals between 35-54.
- Student loan borrowers ages 35 to 49 owe more than $620 billion in student loans, many owning $100K or more.
- 80% of non-profits depend on volunteers and need skilled volunteers.
Sign this petition to tell the President and the Department of Education to expand the PSLF Program to include all borrowers that want to serve their communities by volunteering.
