Allow victims of stalking and abuse to keep their home address confidential in court
Allow victims of stalking and abuse to keep their home address confidential in court
The Issue
What do i want the government or Parliament to do?
Change the law to allow victims of stalking, harassment and abuse to provide a non residential correspondence address in all court proceedings, including applications for Non-Molestation Orders and criminal cases, unless a judge decides disclosure is strictly necessary.
Why is this important?
Victims of stalking, harassment and abuse are currently discouraged from pursuing legal action because they are told their home address may be disclosed to the perpetrator during court proceedings.
Even where protections exist, they are not automatic, not clearly explained, and are applied inconsistently. This creates fear and puts victims at further risk, especially when they have relocated for safety.
No victim should have to choose between their personal safety and seeking justice. The law should provide a clear, consistent right for victims to keep their residential address confidential, while allowing courts to balance this with fair trial rights where absolutely necessary.
