Allow Users to Opt Out of the "Gulf of America" Name Change on Google Maps

Allow Users to Opt Out of the "Gulf of America" Name Change on Google Maps
The Issue
Petition to Google: Allow Users to Opt Out of the "Gulf of America" Name Change on Google Maps. Keep Gulf of Mexico.
To: Google, Alphabet Inc.
From: Concerned Americans Who Support International Cooperation
We, the undersigned, call on Google to respect the diversity of thought among its users by allowing an opt-out option for the name change of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" on Google Maps.
This change, reportedly influenced by political motives rather than historical or geographical accuracy, forces millions of Americans to accept a revisionist and isolationist narrative. Many Americans respect international treaties, global cooperation, and historical accuracy—and do not wish to participate in a petty rebranding effort that alienates our allies and erodes trust in objective cartographic standards.
Why This Matters:
1. Respect for International Borders – The Gulf of Mexico is a shared body of water with Mexico, an important trading partner and neighbor. This unilateral renaming effort ignores diplomatic realities.
2. Freedom of Choice – Users should have the right to opt out of politically motivated map changes. If Google is committed to inclusivity and objectivity, an "opt-in" or "opt-out" feature should be provided.
3. Avoiding Political Manipulation – Google Maps should remain an impartial tool for navigation and education, not a platform for political propaganda.
4. Global Standing – As a global company, Google has a responsibility to maintain factual accuracy, rather than bowing to nationalist rhetoric that damages the U.S.'s reputation.
We demand that Google:
Allow users to toggle between the historically correct name ("Gulf of Mexico") and any alternative names imposed by political actors.
Commit to maintaining fact-based, internationally recognized geographical names rather than caving to partisan pressures.
Google has long been a leader in technological integrity. This is an opportunity to prove that it stands by facts, user choice, and global cooperation rather than divisive political stunts.
Sign this petition to demand that Google allow users the freedom to opt out of the "Gulf of America" rebranding and keep geographical accuracy intact!
