Allow unblocked games in Williamsport Area School District
The Issue
I used to genuinely enjoy going to school. There was a balance between schoolwork and fun, where during breaks or after finishing assignments, we could unwind and refresh ourselves by playing games online. These games weren't just mindless entertainment; they helped develop critical thinking skills, improved hand-eye coordination, and even fostered team-building when played in groups.
However, recently, I've found it increasingly difficult to access sites I need to complete assignments because they are blocked. The tools and resources that aid my learning have been unfairly restricted. This problem has been compounded by the use of programs like GoGuardian, which not only block useful websites but infringe on privacy by monitoring every online move. The implementation of GoGuardian has meant that harmless sites and games which served as an outlet for creativity and relaxation are no longer accessible. Instead of helping students, these restrictions have created an environment of distrust and discomfort.
In today's digital age, where the internet is an essential tool for education, the ability to access a wide range of resources is crucial for academic success. While we understand the importance of maintaining a secure and focused learning environment, the blanket ban on numerous sites is counterproductive. Many of these banned sites offer educational benefits and were used constructively by students like me.
I urge the Williamsport Area School District to reconsider its current stance on internet restrictions and to allow certain unblocked games that are proven to benefit students educationally and socially. There should be an assessment criterion that distinguishes between harmful websites and those that contribute positively to our development. At the same time, a reevaluation of GoGuardian's invasive monitoring should be conducted to protect student privacy while still maintaining a safe educational environment.
With your support, we can make our voices heard and push for a more balanced approach to internet usage in our schools. Join me in petitioning for a change that benefits both our education and our personal growth. Please sign this petition to restore the balance between learning and leisure at Williamsport Area School District. Thank you.
