The Issue

At 15, I know what it means to live in a body that doesn't feel like home. As a trans male, the struggle for self-identification and the pursuit of gender affirming care is not just my reality—it's the reality of many teens across Washington State who face a difficult path due to prevailing legal barriers. Currently, in WA state, transgender youth aged 14 and above, who are capable of making informed decisions, are held back by a system requiring parental consent for gender affirming care. This petition calls for a change that recognizes our maturity and autonomy, and enables us to access the healthcare we need, without the mandate of parental approval.

For many trans youth, the inability to obtain appropriate care stems not from a lack of understanding or readiness, but from household environments where acceptance is scarce. Transphobic attitudes within families can outweigh a teen's need for gender affirming healthcare, leading to dire consequences such as heightened anxiety, depression, and in some tragic cases, self-harm or suicide. We must open a pathway where trans youth in such households can not only survive, but thrive, by legally affirming their gender identity with the same sincerity and care afforded to adults.

Statistics indicate that, according to The Trevor Project, 40% of transgender adults have reported attempting suicide, with many such attempts happening before the age of 18. Immediate access to gender affirming care can drastically lower these numbers, providing the needed support for mental health and self-acceptance. The American Academy of Pediatrics and multiple studies emphasize the positive impact and improved well-being of trans youth when they can access gender affirming treatments early.

The solution is clear: amend the existing policy to allow teenagers aged 14 and older to seek and consent to gender affirming care independently. Moreover, ensure that these actions are kept confidential, safeguarding them against potential backlash from unsupportive families. Healthcare providers should be given the authority to evaluate an individual teen's readiness and understanding, thus allowing youths mature enough to decide to access essential care.

This petition seeks to foster an environment where every young person can live their life authentically and healthily, free from the shadows of transphobia. By supporting this amendment, Washington State can demonstrate a commitment to equality, empathy, and the progressive stand needed to protect the lives of its trans youth.

Please, hear our voices and help build a future where our identities are respected, and our healthcare needs are met with dignity and understanding. Sign this petition to allow trans teens in WA State to have the autonomy to access gender affirming care safely and without fear.
