Message from Kim Cunningham Vitale- Our family has faced significant challenges over the years. I am a two-time cancer survivor, and our nine-year-old son Matteo has courageously overcome cancer as well. Throughout Matteo's recovery journey, raising chickens has played a crucial role in his healing process. When so much seemed beyond his control, the ability to care for and nurture these animals brought him comfort, routine, and peace.

For several years now, Matteo has personally nurtured and raised our chickens on our property. His bond with them has grown deeper, and the companionship of these birds has been undeniably therapeutic – reinforcing his resilience and bringing joy during difficult times. However, despite the positive impact on our family's well-being, we are now facing challenges from local health authorities regarding the presence of these chickens on our property.

About four years ago, the health department conducted an inspection of our property. Since then, no negative issues have been highlighted, yet we find ourselves fighting for the right to keep these valuable companions that have immensely contributed to Matteo's emotional and psychological healing.

It is our belief that the healing benefits provided by these therapy chickens should be recognized and respected by the authorities. Chickens can offer therapeutic support similar to therapy animals like dogs and cats, with numerous research studies validating the physical and emotional benefits of animal-assisted therapy. Ensuring that families in need can choose such therapeutic methods is imperative for community diversity and mental wellbeing.

Our goal is to secure the right to maintain chickens as therapy animals on our property, providing a legal framework that recognizes the substantial emotional support they offer. We urge local authorities to reconsider their regulations and carve out provisions that take into account the unique needs of families with therapy animals like ours.
